Strippy Postage Stamp Quilt – WIP

Posted on July 18, 2014July 19, 2014 by Martha

There’s a reason I can relate to the 1930s quilter who cut all of those tiny quilt pieces for the Double Nine-Patch quilt, which was the subject of my last post. The reason is that I have my own box of slightly larger vintage postage stamp pieces and a partial quilt top that has been languishing for some time. Before I start work on trimming the squares for the Double-Nine Patch, I should probably finish this strippy top.

I was inspired by a similar quilt I saw on an ebay years ago, because I liked the solid/white strips. This is a great pattern for using chain piecing, so the construction goes fairly quickly. Cutting out the little (1 1/8″) squares (852 for each strip) takes much longer. I have no idea if I have enough to finish the quilt, but I sort of doubt it. The top is currently 30″ x 82″ and I need to make six more strips.

I really love the scrappiness(?) of this quilt– So many cute little fabrics to look at and enjoy. Happy sewing!

Too bad your new vintage fabric find squares are not large enough to use for the quilt you already have going. So much work involved.

It is stunning with the blue and white centers. So much care and love went into sewing these. I hope you will be able to find enough squares to finish the rest of the quilt.

Wonderful! Not sure I’d have the patience to stitch them all.

Hi Martha. It’s me again. LOL. I have been looking through some of your earlier post and I found a Mother Goose quilt you made. You had colored the blocks with crayons. That was 4 or 5 years ago. I am wondering if the colors are still very bright. And also, what do you do about washing it? Will the colors still hold up? I was thinking about the pretty flower patterns you gave us last week. Wouldn’t these be so pretty colored and put into a quilt? Thanks for your advice.

You must have laser perfect eyes – I just think of all those 1/4″ seam allowances in this quilt and it looks perfect!!
