This turned out to be such a fun activity at Emily’s shower. The guests really got into it and the hats they made were all so original. I would highly recommend this as a party craft.
The hats take a little while to make, but once you get it down, they go pretty quickly. I used this tutorial video with some small changes. The long piece of the hat needed to be shorter (9 3/4″ on the fold instead of 10 1/2″), which may have been because I was using stiffer bottom weight fabric instead of something more malleable like felt. I also added iron-on interfacing (2 pieces to the side, and one to the top) to give the hat more structural integrity so it could support all the decorations — some of the girls put a lot of stuff on their hats.
Emily and I had so much fun buying things to attach to the hats. Flowers, ribbons, birds (and bird nests), buttons, jewels, feathers & fruit are the more basic things we bought, but it’s also fun to add some weird items as well. You’ll also need to buy cheap low-temp glue guns — we had one for every two or three guests. I displayed all the decorations on the dining room table and gave each person a tray to collect her items. Then they went to stations around the house where I had placed the glue guns in ceramic coffee cups.
Now I’m really sorry I didn’t take some close-ups of the hats so you could see how unique they were. Since I didn’t, I decided to decorate the two leftover hats with the leftover decorations just so you could see how easy this is. Mine aren’t nearly as cute as the ones made by our guests (see previous post), but you get the idea.
And now . . . on to the winners of the apron drawing.
Congratulations to the winners, and thanks to everyone for participating and your nice comments. I will be contacting the winners today.
How cute! I homeschool make historical costumes for our history presentations every 9 weeks. I’ve done all the eras now. I did not, though, make any pillbox hats when we did the 20th century. I could hopefully use ideas here to make historically looking appropriate ones.
Also I’m glad you’re posting all your wedding crafts. My daughter is a senior and though I’d like her to get through college first, I wouldn’t mind her getting married (to the right guy) afterwards. This is such a nice resource for ideas.
I never would have thought of pillbox hats and aprons for a bridal shower. My daughter loves old things so she might be smitten with the idea!

Those hats are priceless — really made me smile looking at them!
Thank you so much — I’m so excited about the apron!!
Those are way too cute! Love them! Congrats to the winners!
The hats are very cute! Congrats to the apron winners!
I looked at the post yesterday and thoughts quickly jumped to Princess Eugenie and her ‘famous’ hat for the royal wedding. 🙂 [Oh … and then thoughts jumped to how the new Princess should wear a slip under her skirt and it wouldn’t be an issue if the wind creates a ‘Marylin Monroe moment’ in Canada. :)]
I came back to the present and thought that I’ll have to try pill boxes, and decorating them for our next Girls Weekend. 🙂
This comes from the gal who once entered Sam’s Club wearing a wreath of silk mini-sunflowers (black-eyed susans?) adorned with red and purple feathers — the ‘gear’ that we “Ya-Yas” had been wearing all weekend. It wasn’t until I bumped into one of my Boy Scouting friends who mentioned my unique head-dress that I even remembered … it’s kind of like a headband .. you put it on, and you notice it, but after awhile, you forget that you have it on. 🙂
But, I babble! Thank you so much for the apron! I can’t hardly wait to try it out. Hmmm … maybe it will have a trip to Sam’s Club in its future, too. 😉 More likely I’ll use it while trying to perfect ‘crispy’ peanut-butter cookies for my favorite college student. 🙂
These are so cute and so much fun!! The colors and sparkles are wonderful together!
