In a couple of posts here and here, I have talked about this pattern and shown a couple of blocks. I have finally managed to scan the entire original pattern. You will notice that my butterfly is different, having 4 D pieces in each wing, as opposed to 3 in the original pattern. It was necessary for me to re-draft the pattern in order to accommodate the vintage quilt swatches I wanted to use in this quilt. I also decided to eliminate a couple of seams. My altered pattern is available here, in case you prefer the 4-piece version.
This is a wonderful pattern for hand stitching (I pieced with a running stitch, without papers), but it is probably not a good choice for a beginning quilter.
Because this pattern is large, it will need to be tile printed. Clicking on the pattern image below will open a full-sized pdf file. Scroll to the bottom of that image, and click on the download button. Open the downloaded file in Acrobat Reader, and select “poster” in the print dialog box. This will allow you to tile print the original pattern size on multiple sheets of letter or legal sized paper, which you can then trim and tape or glue together.
It’s really beautiful Martha. I guess you are using old pieced arcs?
Those are really pretty. I’m not sure I’ve seen that pattern before.
Beautiful Martha! I love the color combination of your vintage fabric. Perfection!
Beautiful sparkly butterflies! the piecing looks complicated. Yours are wonderful! thanks so much for the pattern, Martha!
I’ve never seen that pattern – it’s gorgeous! (And thanks for the not-for-the-beginner advice! Not that it’s likely!)
That is so gorgeous! Thanks for the pattern, Martha – it’s really beautiful in vintage fabrics, especially!
Truly lovely butterflies – one for the to do list!
I have seen these beautiful butterflies before but never saw the pattern. I want to try to make one.
Really really really cute.
I love the butterflies. I do not know how to print the pattern and the instructions in a larger print.

I love this butterfly. I brought it to my quilt group but they are all pushing 80 and thought it would be too hard. Anyway, I’m going to do it myself.
I saw this pattern in a vintage quilt that was being displayed at the History Museum in Atlanta, Ga. I took a picture of it because it struck me so deeply. Haven’t had time to draft the pattern so THANK YOU for doing the work for me.
Just lucked into your blog and enjoy it. Carol
The Butterfly block patterns always seem to intrigue us. I like the block with the turquoise color best.
Oh my! I will never get out of this site…it is wonderful. I love this Butterfly…what size would you recommend to copy the pattern?
Thank you for all the things you do and give for free…it is so nice of you.
I follow your blog, now I will follow you on Pinterist
Thank you for this wonderful pattern. I have a quilt made with this pattern. It is made with feed sack cloth and was hand-stitched by my mother in the 1930’s. It was quilted by my granny with a treadle powered Singer machine (which really ruined the quilt). However, warmth was the predominating necessity, not aesthetics. I cherish it anyway, but it could have been a show piece. I am going to make at least a nap size quilt using my scraps.
Have looked for this pattern for years. It was originally called Gay Wings. Thanks for sharing.-
I made this quilt for my daughter when she graduated from medical school. It took most of her last year at Tulane Med. Sch. all hand made & queen size. I am very upset due to an in-law borrowing the pattern & doesn’t remember!! Is it possible to find it?

Thanks for the inspiration (draft of Butterfly pattern – 4 piece wing).
Absolutely adorable. Love the vintage pattern especially the small prints!
I love QUILTING love to know more.
Muy lindo trabajo.
I just love this butterfly pattern. I printed it and it was a bit over the printed page. I had to print a couple copies, and lay them over each other (flipped) to ge the the exact picture. It seems a bit larger than yours, and I am wondering if you added a 1/4″ seam to the pattern pcs., or if you just sewed? Mine look larger than yours, and judging by the quilt picture in the pattern page, it will make for a larger block with fewer needed in my quilt. (ggod thing) thanks for your help Deby
Oh dear I’ve tried in vein, but just can’t get your pages showing instruction, fabric needed, pattern pieces, cutting blocks, etc. I can’t print instructions. are we able to get these or are you just being a tease with design 7405 lol. Would appreciate your help if possible, thank you.
Beautiful !
Design 7405 is perfect for my butterfly enthusiast quilting friend. I tried to print the pattern but with no luck. Please advise.
