Doll Quilt Blocks with Antique Fabric #2

Posted on January 16, 2010January 16, 2010 by Martha

This morning I finished the first row of the doll quilt. It would have been nice to have a little stripe for the sashing (I like the print in the original quilt), but I didn’t have a piece large enough. I also wish I had enough fabric to make the sashing 1/4″ wider, but I don’t. Even at it’s current width, I may run out of the sashing fabric, but If I do, I’ll make the outside border from a different print. You may notice I made the outer border of my block pattern a little smaller than the pictured quilt — that’s because my scraps are so tiny I wouldn’t have been able to cut the four matching rectangle pieces.

This pattern is a lot of fun because the blocks look very different depending upon the color and contrast of the fabrics in each piece. I try not to spend too much time obsessing over the fabric selections for each block — I even decided to start sewing them together now instead of waiting to arrange them when all of the blocks are done. You can drive yourself crazy over-thinking this kind of thing on a scrap quilt (or at least I can), so for me it just works best to relax and keep going (even if you think you’ve made a pretty weird-looking block, and I’m not saying which one that might be).

    Hi Martha!
Your blocks are FANTASTIC! I’m especially taken with blocks 1, 4 and 6. They look really cool and, to me, they add character and depth (and I’m not saying which one I believe adds the MOST character 🙂 ). I think it is great that you are going ahead and putting the blocks in rows. It will have a wonderful scrappy look that way!

oh my just look at these blocks, I can’t say which ones I like best, they all have their own beauty.
I am still in awe over this project. I am thrilled everytime I see a post means more blocks!
LOVE the yellow in that first block…
can’t wait to see row two, have to say your much braver than I sewing the rows together as you make the blocks! I am one of those that fret over the placement of blocks for a few days before I sew a quilt together!
    thank goodness for design walls.

Martha, I’m in love with these little blocks. I can’t choose a favorite either. Each one is so pretty and I Love the sparkle of yellows and oranges here and there. The layout is beautiful too 🙂

The blocks look fantastic! I don’t think I could just sew rows together? I’m one of those rearrange type people. I love the look of spontaneity in other people’s quilts, though. I wish I could “let go” and just let the layout happen like that. This is such fun..I look forward to watching this cutie grow. 🙂

Martha, They are so cute! I love the little ‘lightening bolt’ middle square. Such tiny prints are so cute.

I also like the quilt gallery on the side bar!
