Emily just sent some photos of her Halloween costume this year. It’s from one of our favorite movies, The Birds. Amazingly, there are people who have never seen the movie, or any other Hitchcock movie for that matter. I think that’s just sad.
We managed to find a bottom-weight fabric that was close to the right shade of green and a pattern for an open jacket that was a pretty good match for the one the Melanie Daniels character wears in most of the movie. First, I had to make a “muslin” (as my friend, Jan, refers to it) because Emily is quite a bit smaller than the pattern’s size 8 — I made my muslin out of an old tablecloth. I cut down a t-shirt of mine for the top — it was hard to find a match for that green color.
Emily didn’t win the prize at her office party, but I think the costume is pretty good — if I do say so myself! Last year she did win wearing a costume that was a bit more work than the one I made this year.
What a great costume! I have to admit that I have never watched all of The Birds. I might have seen most of it in bits and pieces on TV, catching it here and there. I know the scene where she is running from the birds, through the park (or what I recall as a park-like place) and the costume nails it!
Last year’s is good too! I love the white stockings and gold shoes, instead of a long dress.
Those are both really GREAT costumes Martha! Marie Antoinette does look like it took alot of work – so many details! You nailed Melanie! Your daughter looks so pretty in both of them!
It amazes me also that anyone can walk the earth a number of decades and NOT see a single Hitchcock film – in my family that is just WRONG! My oldest two even enjoy Hitchcock Presents. Nothing like a little murder and mayhem to bring a family closer…
Great costumes! I gotta say, though, that I’ve only ever seen maybe 30 minutes of The Birds. Absolutely terrified me. Even the little part I saw (probably 20 years ago) STILL terrifies me. Rear Window is one of my favorite movies – I think I do better with suspense than terror.
I love the Birds, or any Hitchcock movie, great costume! Last years is wonderful too. 🙂
That is absolutely much better than…oh…say….clown costumes! I saw on someone’s blog last year a Barbie tricked out in like fashion. I was sorely tempted, but sanity reigned.
Plus, she looks like she is having such a good time!
