Embroidered Wool Quilt – Row 3

Posted on March 16, 2009March 21, 2013 by Martha

Row 3 is done — only 8 more rows and 44 embroidered squares to go. Although I love the wool, this is probably the most difficult fabric I’ve ever used for embroidery. I have to draw the design freehand since it’s on thick, black fabric, and because the wool is a bit fuzzy, it’s impossible to get a nice clean line with the white pencil. I’ve ripped out a lot of stitches on these little squares, and they still aren’t perfect. I do think the thread looks nice against the dark wool, and the old Simplicity embroidery catalog has been a great resource for the designs.

I am still amazed at how great the colours look on the dark fabric! Have you tried a light-coloured carbon paper to transfer the designs onto the fabric?

Thanks Bunny — I did try the carbon paper, but the fabric is so thick and soft, I couldn’t get the color to transfer to the wool. I am getting a little better at the freehand drawing, though.

Hi there!I just found your blog today through flickr, and I am in love with this quilt. The embroidery work is stunning and the colors make it look so cozy. I keep gearing up to make my first quilt this year but I’m afraid it’ll come out wrong 🙁 but I’ll try! I promise!

I think the bleeding hearts and the basket of flowers are my favorites. And the dragonfly – and the butterfly – and the bird – and the lily of the valley….

Stunning embroidery. Love the colors on the dark wool.
