Sixteen Blue Ribbon Quilts

Posted on November 2, 2012August 2, 2015 by Martha

Of all my old quilt booklets, this one may be my favorite.   It includes some classic applique patterns like Pennsylvania Rose, English Rose, and Aunt Alice’s Blue Wreath, as well as a very nice pattern for the quilt that won the Sears “Century of Progress” Quilt Contest at the 1933 World’s Fair, referred to in this booklet as the “Quilt of the Century.”  This publication contains more instructions than are normally found in these vintage quilt books, and I think it’s especially nice that they added quilting designs for each pattern, including the elaborate trapunto leaf designs in the prize winning quilt.

I’ve never heard of Aunt Alice’s Blue Wreath, and it’s a beauty. You know how much I love these old books … lots of pretty things here.

Gorgeous, gorgeous quilts. Thanks for this, Martha! And I’m really anxious to see the quilt you make with the felt, what an undertaking!

    Dear Madam:
I’ve seen the blue wreath before somewhere as a picture of a finished quilt described as someone made the quilt using her “confederate soldier lover uniform blue color” as the flowers. I thought the confederate uniforms were tan though.. but I could be mistaken because there might have been different rank and platoon etc. Anyway the quilt was so beautiful and I always thought about it. And now here is the pattern. Wow!!!! Thank you so much!!!!

Do you know what year this was published and by whom. I couldn’t find a date on any of the pages. This is a very interesting book and I thoroughly enjoy referring back to it many times.
