Thank you everyone for your kind words regarding Jack’s death. It is hard to lose a pet, but I am feeling much better now.
This embroidered block was very enjoyable to stitch — the tiny outline work really appeals to me, although I did struggle with Alice’s face. The whole piece is stitched with one strand of DMC floss #498, using stem stitch and a few French knots for buttons and eyes. The color is a darker red than I have used in the past, but it seemed to fit the style of the old drawings. The embroidery design area is 6 1/2″ x 10″ and the pattern page is located here.
I just finished cleaning up two more pages in the book. Page 7 with the Duchess was horrible because the child had used black crayon on both the duchess’s face and the cat. I’m done with the really bad pages now, so the rest of the clean-up should go much faster.
These are fantastic! I love seeing them!!
My GOODNESS, Martha! That is really WONDERFUL! I love it when you embroider. It just amazes me how you can translate SO MUCH DETAIL to fabric with thread! It is a very nice red – a little calmer than some reds, it allows you to take you time and really look at the picture.
Oooooh! I love redwork and this is just beautiful! I love the fish footman, too!
Wow! Looks great!!!
I always have troubles with eyes. Very difficult to do without making them look spooky. But yours are beautiful. I never work with just one strand – it seems to little to me when I work with it, but very nice when I’m finished. Which color of red are you using? I’m doing a redwork alphabet with DMC349 and it looks kind of dark, but matches perfectly with fabric I got for the sashing. Can’t wait to see how this looks all finished!

These remind of some penny squares that I think belonged to my great-grandmother – Alice’s dress and hairstyle, and the look of the rabbit – but mine are much less detailed. Your stitching is beautiful.
Wow, your embroidery is so pretty, Martha. It brings the characters to life. You are so patient to do the detailed stitching of the words… very impressive! . I’m eager to see the rest of the blocks when you work on them.
