Applique Butterfly Quilt – WIP

Posted on October 15, 2009July 27, 2015 by Martha

I’ve photographed most of my completed quilts, so now I’m bringing out all the WIPs — and there’s a lot of them. These butterflies are cut from some vintage bow tie quilt blocks I purchased on ebay. They were pretty big blocks, so there was enough fabric left over to make lots of little basket blocks — some of which I used in this doll quilt.

First, I match up the prints and solids and cut out all of the pieces.

Next, I baste the pieces — I never got the hang of needle-turn, but basting works just fine for me.

Then I applique the pieces to the background and add the embroidered details. The red bow tie block was pieced, so that butterfly has one pieced wing.

Oh those fabrics are pretty! I have never done applique, mostly because it never really appealed to me. I love the look, it just doesn’t look ‘fun’ to do. These butterflys are really pretty, though. I may have to re-think…

Oh, those are REALLY pretty Martha! The black dotted fabric does a great job of tying all the other fabrics together and accenting them. I haven’t tried applique either. It intimidates me! I might have to give it a whirl for a little dress I’m planning for the baby – so I may be “knocking” on your door!

love that you pieced one of the wings 😉
you have such a beautiful collection of 30’s fabrics, and love the black stitching too…

I love that you have used bow tie blocks to make butterflies instead of just using them as bow ties. I tend to just see my vintage quilt blocks as the pattern they are, I never think out of the box like that.

And those fabrics in the first photo? Pure eye candy.

Your Butterflies are so graceful looking! Very pretty. 🙂
I love the one with the pieced wing, especially.
The black stitching looks true to the era of the fabrics. I have 2 quilt tops done the same way. It’s extra nice with the black body of the Butterfly.
