My daughter, Emily, and her boyfriend, Aaron, are engaged to be married, which is not exactly a surprise since they have been together since high school. Aaron is just like a member of our family already, and we are so happy to make it official. Although the wedding is not until next summer, Emily and I are engrossed in preparations.
Emily has always loved Depression glass, so we decided to use mainly Depression green (and some pink) as the wedding colors. We started collecting glassware (especially vases and pitchers, but also plates, candy dishes and candlesticks) for the tables, and we are having lots of fun visiting antique stores. Emily would have loved to put pink peonies in her cute vases, but unfortunately they will not be in season and are also pretty expensive. She has decided to use ranunculus instead, which I think is a nice alternative (smaller, but with a similar look).
I am in the process of embroidering 100+ napkins with their initials. At first I was going to stitch the solid areas in satin stitch, but after completing one napkin, I changed my mind and used a crayon. It’s not quite as nice, but the satin stitch was way too time-consuming. I have to make one about every third day from now until the wedding.
Another project I am planning is table toppers (circles or rectangles, depending upon the table shape). These are going to be simple, and we are thinking of this nursery dot fabric from Joann’s. If I use a 50% coupon, I can buy a whole bolt for $2.50/yard. I am also going to make lots of scalloped pennants out of the same fabric, and I’m thinking about bows for the chair backs. I know those can use a lot of fabric, so I’m going to have to make a few samples to see if it’s feasible.
Hi Martha- I just got back from a wedding in Ohio and I can see that it takes alot of planning to make the wedding day come together. It looks like you and Emily have some wonderful ideas and plans already started. I love the color green of the fabric- so soft and pretty. Keep us all posted with your preparations. I just know the wedding will be beautiful!
Congratulations. That so nice that you are willing to create items for her wedding.
Martha,
After a good visit at the doctor this morning I am feeling much more confident about the possibility of there actually being a baby at the end of this road and wanted to let you know that I would love to work on a baby quilt while I waste every day on the couch.
And I want to thank you very much for the generous offer. I am finding it so hard to concentrate enough to sort out anything on my own right now. Ugh. 🙂
Congratulations!
I just love the embroidered napkins! and green depression glass is just gorgeous.
I think this will be the most beautiful wedding Ever. Those napkins are too beautiful, love the idea of using a crayon instead of a satin stitch. It actually looks more vintage – at least to that era.
The napkins look fabulous! How fun to be able to shop at antique stores with a ‘purpose’! I am certain that with your skill and creativity, it will be a gorgeous wedding! Congrats to Emily and Aaron!
How fun to make her wedding so unique!! I love your ideas!!
weddings are so much fun to plan for. It sounds beautiful.
Congratulations!!! The napkin is beautiful! Reading about your wedding plans is so exciting. It is going to be awesome with all the details you are planning!!
Congrats to all, and much luck on all the planning and shopping and doing. The napkins look wonderful, and all looks like so much fun!
Congratulations to Emily and Aaron! The napkins are such a nice keepsake; sure there will be a lot to embroider but you won’t have to rush them and maybe you can employ a friend or two to help out. Good call on deciding against the satin stitch! It just wouldn’t do for the mother of the bride to have aching hands on the big day. 🙂
I think as soon as I started looking for depression glass, the word went out and it all vanished! I have found a couple of pieces (one for a quarter!!!) and promise I will take a decent photo and shoot it your way. This is going to be such a wonderful wedding!
Wow! The plans for Emily’s wedding sound WONDERFUL! I have some pink depression glass from my mom’s side of the family and LOVE it – pairing it with green sounds just LOVELY!
The napkins you are making are BEAUTIFUL also! I recently ran across a monogram I embroidered for myself in a font much like the one you have chosen. It is satin stitched. Looking at it now, I was surprised at how pretty I thought it was, because at the time I made it I found it to be TERRIBLY frustrating working to get the satin stitch to look right and put it away when I was done, having become totally disgusted with it. I think the crayon looks GREAT and for some reason, I imagine it fitting in better with the depression glass and table toppers.
It is so fun getting a peek at Emily’s wedding!
So lovely! All those hand made touches take time…but they sure make a wedding! Let your blog friends know if you need help with stitching. I imagine that there are many of us who could handle some bows or bunting (although, I’m not sure that there would be many with such lovely embroidery stitches as you have).
The depression glass sounds like a fantastic idea!
I had pink peonies at my wedding (I loved them so!). However, my wedding was earlier in the summer and I floated only one luscious peony in a green glass bowl at each table. Come to think of it…I think that I had the same colours as Emily (pink and a fresh green). I must say that you and Emily sound like you have fantastic taste! 😉
I think that the ranunculus will be beautiful!
