Yellow Duck Quilt Top

Posted on July 18, 2009July 18, 2009 by Martha

This is the little quilt I’m making for one of my friends at school.  The ducks are a decorator fabric I purchased at a local fabric store that was going out of business.  At the time I had no idea what I was going to do with it (it was just so cheap), but I think it worked out pretty well in this quilt.  I wanted something pretty simple in the middle because I thought the ducks should be the focus of the quilt.  Usually I don’t take the time to hand quilt these school baby quilts (it’s like Village of the Damned up there), so I had planned on tying the quilt with embroidery floss using the red color. Now I’m thinking that might be too distracting in the yellow/white blocks — maybe yellow floss would be better.  What do you think?

That duck fabric is wonderful – perfect for that quilt. You might be right about the red being distracting – but I’m not a quilter, so rely on more advice than mine!

Like your quilt. Good use for the duck fabric. I wonder if this is for a fairly new babe or an older one, say over 5 mo. The yellow to tie with would be a calming color for a newer child. The older would like the red because it would catch their attention and they would be trying to pick at the ties. Either way, it will be lovely.

That quilt is TOO CUTE!!! I love those little duckies, and your blocks, and the red sashing pops like corn!!! That’s one lucky tike.

I think you are right about using yellow to tie the blocks. I’m afraid red would distract from the block pattern and it is just too perfect to mess with. But what do you think about red frolicking on the border with the duckies? Is it taboo to tie with two colors?

The ducks are too cute! I was thinking that I like the red, but then I read Ann’s suggestion and I agree with her that the red in the duck area would be nice, but might not work as well in the center blocks. I think using both colors would be very effective. The yellow and white blocks are very cool – I am always amazed at what you can do with triangles!

Your ducky quilt is adorable! I was leaning toward the yellow floss but think the red in the border (and sash…) would be cute too!

Wonderful quilt!!! I had the same fabric in red and blue and couldn’t figure out what to do with it (as you know the print is big) so I just did a wholecloth baby quilt. I love your idea using it as a border. VERY CLEVER!!!

Oh Lordy, what is this fabric? Can one of you tell us? (Maybe from the selvedges?)

I’d consider using either pale yellow or off-white to tie the quilt. Maybe try a couple of each and see which looks better to you.

    Beautiful piece!!!
