Socks — Taos, NM

Posted on September 20, 2011July 28, 2015 by Martha

When I’m on road trips, I like to buy stuff. On Sunday we drove 10 hours straight through the Oklahoma panhandle to reach pretty Taos, New Mexico. The old plaza is so cute, but also a bit touristy, with lots of souvenir shops.  However, there are also wonderful galleries and many shops filled with beautiful items made by the local artists.  I was drawn to the gorgeous hand spun and dyed yarns. Although I haven’t knitted anything since I was in my twenties, I was inspired by Ann at Nifty Needle, who just learned how to knit, and who decided to make socks as her first project.  I always thought socks looked so complicated with all those double-pointed needles, but I’m going to give it a try anyway.

This yarn is Merino wool and bamboo in beautiful muted shades of purple, and the book was recommended by the shop owner.

That yarn is so pretty! Let us know how you do – I’m planning on learning to knit this winter, and I definitely want to do socks! I’ll look for that book.

Don’t you just love the way Taos / Santa Fe smell in the fall? And the gorgeous chili ristras everywhere! Love it. Socks seem way too complicated to me. A “pair” of anything is intimidating – I’d never get two the same!

Love that color!!! 🙂 Good luck with the socks, I”m sure you can find a Knitter who can help you if you get stuck somewhere……but I doubt you will, you are so clever!!!
    Hugs, Mickie

I love your yarn! I’m working on a pair of socks right now.
I have the book you have, but so far have just used the pattern that came with my first sock yarn purchase, rather than branching out.
The hardest part for me was getting the cast- on right. There are great videos on youtube that showed me how to do it.
For me, the cast on and first row were a bit fumbly, but then it went really easy. Have fun!
