Here’s a project I started a few days ago. This little quilt was inspired by an unbelievably tiny GFG doll quilt made by Steffi at Steffi’s Candy Quilts. I couldn’t imagine making a quilt that small, but I really wanted to try it — my hexagons are about 1/2″ wide.
The quilt is 21″ long — it will be a rectangle with five or six vertical rows. Steffi and I use the same sewing technique, which is a simple running stitch. Even though there are lots of little pieces, it works up quickly since there are only five tiny stitches on each side of the hexagons.
I have a scrappy Grandmother’s Flower Garden bed quilt in process that looks just like this, as well as several other Flower Garden quilts. I just love working with hexagons.
What a great way to use tiny pieces! Thanks for putting the penny in the photo. It really illustrates the scale!
Yeah, without the penny I never would have been able to wrap my mind around how TINY those hexagons are! That is going to be one ADORABLE and AMAZING quilt!!
Thanks for including the link to Steffi’s quilt. I love the photo of the backside!
Hey, how cool! π You were very productive in only a few days! I am so happy that I inspired you to that project. Your scrappy version is very beautiful, and I would LOVE to see your other hexagon projects. They are very addictive, arenΒ΄t they? I am already planning my next one.
(Last year we found an American penny when we were in Denmark – so now I know the size of that coin.) π
This is very pretty, and so teeny! Hexagons are very addictive I agree!
This is a neat way to use scraps. You are very adventurous. I like the white with it.
aww… so tiny!! I love the white with these cute prints. It is turning out to be an adorable little quilt π
You only started this a few days ago? Wow! It’s adorable!!
This is going to be beautiful!
As I looked at the first picture and read “half inch,” I wondered how big those hexagons could actually be – and then the penny picture answered my question. That is amazing, Martha!
WOW, those are tiny… and you say hers are half that size?!?! EGAD. Your quilt is looking AMAZING.
That is a really creative doll quilt. The hexagons are really a nice theme. My wife and I are going to bookmark this and make it someday when we have a grandaughter. π
Absolutely adorable! How do you even hold onto them for sewing?
Thanks for adding the penny it really helps me realize the scale. You and Steffi are crazy…but in a good way. π LOL
Martha,
That is going to be an amazing little quilt! You do such lovely work.
I made a fullsized (1″ hexagons) GMFG, but I used the English paperpiece method. I think I will try the straight stitching method (someday). I’ve always loved the tiny hexagons, great for a doll sized quilt, and I love doll quilts too, because they are small enough to get done in a reasonable time.
How was this done on machine? Beautiful!
