This coloring book was published by Whitman in 1934 and the binding is falling apart. Fortunately, all of the pages are intact — although some of them are colored in, they are neatly done. I love so many of the illustrations in this book — there are lots of simple designs that are very unusual and I will share those later.
There are just a few pages of these grid pictures and I’ve never seen anything quite like them. The child was supposed to copy the drawing on the grid below the picture, which I think was a cool idea. I really like the designs — they would look cute stitched on even-weave fabric.
Interesting how motifs evolve! I guess there might be some GI Joe coloring books with soldiers loading cannons, but I have never seen that sort of thing in a coloring book! I think I would have liked the grid process as a child. About the only thing that I could draw was a stick figure. And then only a stick figure facing straight ahead with arms out!
ah yes this would make such a cute childs quilts
don’t you just love books like this, I do.

That is a cool book – maybe it’s the time of year, but the baseball page really caught my eye.
My two oldest had an assignment in 5th grade math where they chose a small cartoon (mine did Archie), drew a precise grid on it, drew a proportionally larger grid on an 8.5 x 11 sheet and then drew the cartoon on the larger page. I was amazed with the outcome!
My children have an art program called Draw Today which is based on drawing with grids. This coloring book is a treasure and could be adapted so easily to needlework. Thank you for sharing!
a great addition. thank you.
