Embroidered Wool Quilt — Row 2

Posted on March 10, 2009March 21, 2013 by Martha

I’m excited about this project — it’s a nice change from my usual vintage cottons. The wool is very nice to work with, but no hand quilting on this project — it’s way too thick and many of the squares are a bit fuzzy. I am planning to tie it with yarn and back it with something soft, although I’m not sure what that might be at this point.

Ooohhh… a lovely way to combine my two current obsessions (quilts and embroidery).

    You do really nice work!

The embroidery looks beautiful on the dark fabric! I love the bleeding heart plant.

I would suggest backing it with a good flannel if you’re going for soft, and it sews well to wool fabrics. Plus, it’s not too heavy and warm. Fleece would be a nice, soft material for backing, but it can be stretchy to work with when sewing it to woolens, and in addition to the woolens, way too warm to sleep under, I would imagine!

Thanks Mal* and Bunny for your nice comments. Bunny — That’s an excellent idea about the flannel. I hadn’t really considered flannel because I was thinking the colors/prints wouldn’t work. After reading your comment, I checked online and found lots of darker colors that would be nice.

Martha, I love your color choices for the embroidery. I have trouble being creative with colors. That is probably why I am drawn to red-work (even when it is green or blue…)!
